Finding oneself in Public Health

This afternoon I attended a lecture given by Dr Felton Earls, from the Harvard School of Public Health, and it both inspired and grounded me further. He spoke of his experiences as a physician, public health advocate and community leader.

Here is a taste of Dr Earls work by The My Hero Project:

On April 5, 1968, neurophysiologist Dr. Felton Earls emerged from a soundproof room in an underground laboratory at the University of Wisconsin, where he had spent the last 36 hours mapping the responses of a cat's brain to high- and low-frequency sounds. What he found was a campus in uproar, and a totally changed world; Dr. Martin Luther King had been assassinated.

At that moment, Earls decided he could not in good conscience spend his career shut off in the cloister of the academic laboratory. He rededicated himself immediately to what he calls society's best hope: our children, and the communities that nurture them. He switched professional gears to gain degrees as a pediatrician, a child psychiatrist, and a professor of human behavior and development at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Earls has become a social scientist in the most literal sense of the term--a doctor who treats communities. According to a January 6, 2004 article in the New York Times called "On Crime as Science (One Neighbor at a Time)," his groundbreaking field research is credited with debunking the "broken windows" theory of crime and is turning the field of criminology on its head. His research reveals a startling finding: The most important determinant with respect to crime rates is not race, IQ, family, or individual temperament, but the willingness of neighbors to act, when needed, for one another's benefit, particularly for the benefit of one another's children.

The policy implications of his work are far-reaching. In the words of a former director for the National Institute of Justice, this finding is "far and away the most important research insight in the last decade."

Here is also an interview with Dr Earls by the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences.

One of Dr Earls' biggest findings which he discussed during today's lecture was the idea of "Collective Efficacy". Through a study done in Chicago from 1990-1996, Dr Earls looked into the spatial distribution in homicide occurrences throughout different neighborhoods. What he found was that neighborhoods with high homicide rates also had a high rate of low birth weight infants. Not only that but he found a way to measure "Collective Efficacy", which captures the link between cohesion, specially working trust, and shared expectations for action within a neighborhood, for example. Dr Earls further found that areas with high collective efficacy had low homicide rate, further public health implications and vice versa.

The Arts: Degas and the Nude - The MFA

Last week I had the delight of visiting the MFA's 'Degas and the Nude' exhibition. I ended up engulfed in this world, staying immersed for an entire 2 hours until they were shutting off the lights and closing the museum. The exhibition is only open until February 5th so don't miss the chance to see it!

"This brilliant survey examines this inexhaustible master's long,

evolving fascination with the female body, beginning with

meticulous academic studies from a youthful sojourn in Italy and

ending with vigorous, radically cropped pastels from the end of

his life. Comparative works underscore Degas's responses to the

art of both precursors and contemporaries, as well as his

influence. His shifting aspirations are made plain, from a desire

to evoke the past—an early vision of Spartan youths exercising—

to a wholehearted embrace of the present: contemporary women

I have been so thankful for your support on this silly blog/life project. I quite enjoy sharing a little bit of my world with you guys. But I would love it even more if I could make this experience better for you. I can't promise anything since time is always a constraint. However I am informed of the number of people who check in here but most interestingly where you are looking in from. To no surprise the U.S. and Brazil are on top but Israel and the Netherlands linger behind. I once was asked to write more in my native language, well, who knows which one that is now, but sometimes, portuguese, and I apologize if I haven't translated posts often enough.. The Film: The Artist

Last night I dragged my number one partner in crime to see "The Artist", a wonderful black and white silent film, suggested by a good friend and lover of silent films. There are many layers to the plot, of course, about which I could go on forever, but to me it speaks of an artist's ego, the modernization of films from silent to talkies, the importance of creativity, but most importantly the power of friendship and love. From the main character's relationship to his dog, his "wife", his butler, and his love Peppy, each one unique and revealing. One of my favorite lines/scenes is when his butler confronts him and says "Beware of your pride sir!". But of course as a crazy romantic, Peppy's relentless love spoke to me the most.
